Since becoming a vegetarian I’ve felt a new openness and lightness. Channels have been cleared and obstacles have been removed; energy is flowing more freely from top to bottom. An elimination of obstructions, both physical and spiritual. And with this I’ve discovered a new sensitivity. How do you know what it’s like to not have something when you’ve had it all of your life? I’ve eaten meat for 29 years and I never knew what it was like to not eat meat. Sometimes the best way to know what you have is to take it away. I took meat out of my diet, out of my body, and I was able to see what was underneath and able to experience what I was putting on top. I became more sensitive, sensitive to the quality of food, the character of food, and the impact of what I ate. I developed a new awareness of my body as an organic being, realizing it’s made of the same material as Earth and Nature. It seemed so simple and made perfect sense, a new understanding of what it means to live in accordance with the world around me.

I became vegetarian as an experiment, to see what it was like, and to do so without adhering to a hard and fast ideology. First it was a physical experience: I felt lighter, more open, and even stronger; more efficient. I developed an increasing sensitivity to the essence of what I ate: what was wholesome felt instantly energizing and life-affirming; what was unwholesome felt instantly empty and life-draining. I could feel the nutrients of various foods rushing to and kindling various parts of my body. The act of eating became even more pleasurable than before.

Then I understood vegetarianism on a moral level. Here was the way I approached it: To live in harmony with one’s environment, there needs to be a constant sense of give-and-take, a mutual respect that promotes sustainability for eternity. Food is sustenance. Nature provides food for humans to live. It offers fruits, grains, plants. When we take of these things we must pay our respects with gratitude: “I am grateful for this food to have as my sustenance.” In return for our gratitude, Nature replaces these simple things that we take; no harm done and the Earth is found as it was left. But with animals, there is no gratitude we could possibly pay that would replace taking a life. Once a life is taken, that’s it, it’s over, it doesn’t come back. To kill an animal is the end, the animal does not grow back and it is not replaced. There is no sense of gratitude that can equal the taking of a life. In that regard, I don’t eat meat because I could never be grateful enough for eating a life. This sense of gratitude promotes a strong sense of living in harmony with the world around me. If everybody functioned with gratitude, kindness, and respect, the world would be sustainable for eternity. My moral approach to my diet is that food is an offering from the Earth and for that I am grateful. The Earth regenerates its vegetables, grains, fruits, legumes, nuts, etc., so therefore it is within my right to respectfully take from it for my sustenance. I, or Nature, could never replace the life of an animal so therefore it is not within my right to take from it for my sustenance. (In this light, eating animal products is ok with me since the animal is not killed for its offering. Milk is an offering from the cow, honey is an offering from the bee. I have moral issues with the way these products are sometimes obtained but I don’t feel that there is anything inherently immoral with taking them for consumption. For me, milk and honey are very nutritious food sources that have prominence in my diet). I began to regard humans and other animals as co-existing on the same rung of the food-chain; to eat animals would be almost cannibalistic.

Tonight, I finally understood what it means to be a practicing vegetarian. Some vegetarians say it’s ‘wrong’ to kill animals or use animals for food (as I did above). I see that as a matter of principle- and principles aren’t necessarily true or real. It is almost always more powerful to have something be an innate experience, to feel it from your core rather than as an ideology. It finally made sense to me what it means to be practicing vegetarianism: it has to do with making the decision to willingly act for kindness and to renounce violence. To not eat meat, is to say to myself, “I will consciously make the decision to not eat animals killed for my sustenance.” It is a choice- and that is the point. There is no wrong or right, good or bad. But there is, for me, a prolonged sensation that comes with acting for kindness, peace, and non-violence; with acting for openness. This type of consciousness broadens into every other aspect of life: personal relationships (hostility vs. compassion), attitudes towards one’s self (acceptance vs. punishment), and approaches towards daily living (gratitude vs. selfishness). To practice non-violence, in any form, is a reward in itself, and it feels right and undeniably good. So, practicing vegetarianism becomes less about the ideological reason of it being wrong to kill animals for food; it doesn’t bother me that other people are meat eaters and I believe people have the right to choose to eat meat if they like (whereas, nobody has the right to kill another human being, not even if they like). I do it as a way of practicing non-violence; it is a way of bringing peaceful consciousness into my life and a way of making choices that help me maintain that feeling from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep. It promotes openness and the removal of obstacles as a means of developing heightened sensitivity and broader awareness; it affirms unity and coexistence; it is a way of acting and living for peace, sustainability, and eternity. For me, it has become a way of cultivating a sense of spiritual well-being, and that always comes down to Love, define it as you will. At the moment, this is the way that is working for me, as it feels right. It is a continual experiment.

In the end, I think too much importance is given to the debate between, ‘is it better to have a vegetarian diet or is it ok to eat meat?’ It can become a back and forth with many twists that won’t lead to a sense of resolution. Really, in the end, I don’t think it matters, though the pros do seem to favor vegetarianism. Vegetarians are certainly no better people than meat eaters. And, different diets work for different people. The real question should be regarding what will improve the quality of life- physically, mentally, emotionally, and, spiritually -for us as individuals and the world that we share with everyone else. And, once finding that, making efforts to move in that direction, and then to live in it.

for a Vegetarian Lifestyle

Introduction

Vegetarianism has always been an interest of mine. However, I didn’t become a vegetarian until Fall of 1999. Since that time I’ve learned more and more about the effects of vegetarianism on our society. But, I could never find reliable information to support some of the claims. Not being one who enjoys blind faith, I searched and searched for evidence to support the the specific claims that vegetarianism positively effects the environment.

Most radical vegan/vegetarian groups push for animal rights. But many people don’t care about animal rights, do they? Of my reasons for being vegetarian, animal rights is lowest on the list–which is not to state that I don’t care about animal rights, it’s just not as important as the other reasons, especially environmentalism. So, what benefits are there for vegetarianism?

This essay aims to explain logically, using verifiable evidence, why a vegetarian lifestyle will help our planet and the Earth’s population as a whole.

Could Vegetarianism Positively Effect the Environment and Economics?

What I’ve found from the radical pro-vegan pamphlets is a lot of unverifiable data stating how livestock creation destroys the environment. Anyone can give out statistical information, 78% of the world’s population knows that. However, the argument is logical.

First lets start with what is oversimplified factual reasoning without the use of numbers and statistics.

Land + Water = Crops

Land + Water + Crops = Livestock

Obviously there are more variables. However, for our purposes here, this is all I need to address.

Looking at the statements above, I don’t think that anyone can argue, aside from other variables, that this is what it takes to grow crops and to raise livestock. This simple breakdown already demonstrates an easy point: We all know that the Earth has limited resources, right? I mean there aren’t any places on the planet that I know of where spontaneous growth of resources takes place. We only have so much water, so much land, so many trees, so many humans, so many mountains, so many flowers, etc., etc. That point is not arguable.

So, look at the statements above. Land + Water = Crops. Let me rephrase that: of the limited land and water on the planet, some land plus some water equals some crops. This land is always used as farm land and nothing else. This water is used to grow crops and nothing else. Let’s look at the next statement: Of the limited land, water, and crops on the planet, some land plus some water plus some crops equals some livestock. And aside from the hundreds of other variables, there still is no argument, and I believe that I am still stating facts:

There is not an unlimited amount of land- Fact. There is not an unlimited amount of water-Fact. There is not an unlimited amount of crops- Fact. There is not an unlimited amount of livestock- Fact.

Let me add another fact: The world’s population is increasing. Adding another fact: those humans need a place to live, water to drink, and food to eat. At this point I have stated six generalized facts. No numbers, no statistics. All facts.

Now let’s reason through this:

If there is limited land, limited water, limited crops and limited livestock then, where will these humans live? What will these humans drink? What will these humans eat? How will these humans survive?

Is this an essay for birth control? It very well could be. At this point, I could take this reasoning into several different directions. And as you start to think about this, hopefully your mind will open and see that this is a global issue that will effect everyone on our planet. In fact, I encourage you to think through this in any direction that has popped in to your head. And even consider applying this towards other limited resources: oil, vitamins, medicine, doctors and clothing. The simple fact is that the Earth has limited resources and as our population grows, and if things do not change, they will be used to depletion.

But, my cause today is vegetarianism. So, now, how does vegetarianism help with these limited resources? Very simply: if you look at the two statements: Land + Water = Crops and Land + Water + Crops = Livestock you can see that the limited resources are repeated in both statements. By eating meat, humans are using limited resources to create crops. Then additional limited resources plus those crops are used to create livestock. Wouldn’t it make sense to just eat the crops?

Before I move forward, I must point out that the nutritional argument for meat consumption is clearly obsolete. Fact: many people survive today without consuming any animal products. Overall, these people live in better health than meat-eaters. And I will provide fact for this statement from the American Dietetic Association:

Moving forward.

By limiting or abstaining from meat consumption, less of our limited resources would be consumed. Why is that? I will pick on cows because they are easiest on which to pick. Cows are large animals that take up a large amount of space. They require land on which to walk, grass on which to graze, and plenty of water to drink. They also eat grain and other crops as food. If cows were removed from our diet, all of the land they use, all of the water they drink, and all of the crops they consume would be available for human consumption. As the population increases, the need for land increases, the need for water increases, and the need for food increases. By putting meat on the menu, less land, less water, and less food is available.

After forgetting the statistics I had read and by reasoning through this in my own head, I figured that there has to be someone out there who isn’t a militant vegan and has little to gain from “lying” about these statistical facts. Believe me, it’s difficult to find a scientific organization without ties for or against the meat industry to back up or contest this reasoning. And, as mentioned, I’m not one who enjoys blind faith. I want to know! I want to be validated!

One day while watching The Learning Channel (TLC), I learned that in the Biosphere, all food was vegetarian. I was fascinated to find that because of limited resources, meat was left off of the menu. This was a group of scientists who had come to the conclusion that because of limited resources, vegetarianism was the most environmentally and economically friendly food-source. And it went beyond that, having the plants for food also converted the carbon dioxide to oxygen to give the Biosphere breathable air.

The Biosphere project is a “testing ground” for sustaining life during long space flights, on a space station, or on an in-hospitable planet. A group of scientists are given limited space, limited water, and limited resources and are contained in this “dome” for a length of time without any outside resources coming in or without inside waste coming out. It is supposed to be a completely self-contained environment.

Given limited resources, just like our planet, scientists devised the best way to sustain life in a healthy and humane way. It was determined that plant sources for nutrition would be the best all-around answer for many reasons. For one thing, they don’t use much room. If they were to raise livestock in the Biosphere, they would not only need a place to grow the plants, but also a place to grow the livestock. This would impede on the total equipment they could take with them as there would only be so much room. On top of that, not only would the crops need water but the livestock would need water, increasing their need for fresh water. And even further on from that, there would be a substantial increase in waste coming from not only the humans, but now the animals as well. Plus, they would need an area to slaughter the animals which would create an issue of leftover bones and the potential to cause bacteria and illness throughout the dome.

It was decided that a plant-based diet would make the most sense as it would take up a small amount of space, use a small amount of water, create little to no waste, would provide a pleasant and relaxing “green” environment within the dome and it would convert carbon dioxide to oxygen for fresh air.

Why is our planet any different? Isn’t our planet just a big Biosphere? Our planet has limited resources just like the Biosphere. Don’t the same rules apply? The Biosphere is our planet, just on a smaller scale. By continuing to industrialize livestock all over our planet, we are using more and more of the Earth’s resources. Forests are being destroyed for livestock. Food that could be given to the Earth’s poor are being used to feed livestock. Water is being used to raise livestock which could be used for humans or crops. The Earth’s resources are being used and we’re burning the candle on both ends.

Among many poor uses of the world’s fresh water supply, in his article “Making Every Drop Count”, published in the February 2001 issue of Scientific American, Peter H. Gleick states that “Growing a pound of corn can take between 100 and 250 gallons of water…But growing the grain to produce a pound of beef can require between 2000 and 8500 gallons.” That is a startling difference.

Just a pound of beef! Conservatively taking 2000 gallons as the mean for producing a pound of beef, think about how much 2000 gallons of water is. How much water do you drink in a day? A gallon? Half a gallon? How many gallons of water do you think you use when you shower? 30-40 gallons? Every time you flush the toilet in a day, how many gallons? 15-20? Every time you wash your hands? 2-3 gallons? Let’s go for the high end and say that the average human uses 100 gallons of water in a day. After 20 average days of your use of water, you would have created 1 pound of beef. 1 pound. You could conservatively eat for 2-3 days on a pound of beef. Now think about the fact that it is possible to take four times as much water to create a pound of beef-80 days worth of your daily water consumption to make 1 pound of beef. The water that you use over about 3 months time will produce a pound of beef. ONE POUND.

Now look at the alternative. A pound of corn is grown using 100-250 gallons of water. How long will that last? 2-3 days? Obviously a pound of corn would get boring and it isn’t nutritionally sound, but if all you had was a pound of corn, you could eat it over 2-3 days. Now looking at the high end, if we’ve reasoned that the average American uses 100 gallons of water a day, how many days worth of water would it take to make a pound of corn? 2-3 days. And how long could you live on a pound of corn? 2-3 days.

Again, I will point out that aside from the numbers given in Mr. Gleick’s article, all other numbers are purely speculative. I’ve tried to create numbers based in reason and based on averages above or below the point I’m trying to make. Perhaps the average American uses 200 gallons of water a day and it only takes, on average, 2000 gallons of water for a pound of beef. My point is still valid. My speculation may be purely speculation but it is based in reality and it does prove my point.

Sandra Postel, in her article “Growing more Food with less Water” also in the February 2001 Scientific American, states that “The Typical North American diet…requires twice as much water to produce as the less meat-intensive diets common in many Asian and some European countries. Eating lower on the food chain could allow the same volume of water to feed two Americans instead of one, with no loss in overall nutrition.” How is it that several scientists without ties to the meat industry can clearly state the ecological and environmental benefits of a vegetarian diet and we as Americans and the world as a whole are left in the dark? In my opinion, tradition, pride and money.

Everyone around the world today only knows what our parents and society has told us and what we have seen in the media. And what do we see? Meat is what everyone eats and meat is what wealthy people eat. Our government has a lot to lose if meat consumption is cut back. The government collects taxes from every piece of the puzzle-seeds, water, labor, fuel, equipment-everything.

Think about it: They tax the seeds the farmer buys, they tax the water the seeds need to grow, they tax the sale of the equipment used to plow the field, they tax the labor used to plow the field, then they tax the shipment of the crops, they tax the sale of the crops to the livestock producers, they tax the equipment used to produce the livestock, they tax the labor used to produce livestock, they tax the water consumed by the livestock, they tax the shipment of the livestock to the slaughterhouse, they tax the labor at the slaughterhouse, the equipment at the slaughterhouse, they tax the shipment of the meat to the grocery, they tax the sale to the grocery, and then they tax the labor to set up and sell the meat. Oh yeah, and they tax the grocery and the slaughterhouse for the packaging and equipment used to package the meat for resale.

Sounds like a great business! They get their cut all the way through. If we were to cut out the livestock and just shipped the crops right to the grocery, the government would lose money.

Who else would lose money? The industrialized meat manufacturers who spend millions of dollars lobbying the government just to make sure the meat business is kept alive. Supposedly some of the members of the FDA committee who created the four food groups and the recommended servings of meat had ties to the meat industry. How is it that the FDA says eat meat and in a great quantity but then the ADA states that a vegetarian diet is healthier? Someone isn’t telling someone else all that is going on.

In Mr. Gleick’s article, he mentions that reform in water consumption “requires fundamental changes in how we think about water, and such changes are coming about slowly”. This not only applies to water, but also to land and other limited Earth resources. Tradition and conventional thinking are slowing things down. Why can’t we let go of tradition and do what’s right? “Rather than trying endlessly to find enough water to meet hazy projections or future desires, it is time to find a way to meet our present and future needs with water that is already available, while preserving the ecological cycles that are so integral to human well-being.”

Clearly there is enough evidence and scientific backing to encourage a vegetarian lifestyle. Our health, our future, our children’s health and future all depend on it. With the recent outbreaks of Mad Cow and Hoof and Mouth, maybe our living planet is trying to tell us something? Perhaps the Earth is combating the overpopulation of livestock and destruction of the planet in its own way. Will we listen? Only if enough people start to realize that we are heading down a dangerous path. We are technologically advanced enough to not need meat as nutrition. But the message is not getting out.

Americans have a pre-conceived notion that eating meat is a reflection of health and prosperity. The “chicken in every pot” mentality has been passed down from generation to generation and it’s difficult to break–even if we know it’s wrong. Clearly something’s got to give and I hope it’s not a compromise of humankind.

DAGING

Dibutuhkan 11 kali lipat energi untuk memproduksi daging ataupun makanan-makanan berlemak lainnya dibandingkan dengan energi yang dibutuhkan untuk memproduksi biji-bijian.

* Sekarang merupakan hal yang umum bagi para petani untuk menggunakan kandang-kandang sempit untuk mengembangbiakkan babi-babi. Kandang-kandang kecil ini hampir-hampir tidak dapat mengimbangi besarnya tubuh babi-babi yang tumbuh dengan pesat sebagai akibat dari berbagai macam hormon yang disuntikkan. Babi-babi sangatlah pandai – lebih daripada anjing – sehingga perlakuan terhadap mereka benar-benar membawa kesedihan.

* Babi-babi betina dibuat hamil sepanjang hidupnya. Sebagian besar kandang babi memiliki sebuah palang yang ditempatkan diatas babi betina untuk membuatnya terus berbaring agar bayi-bayinya dapat dengan mudah menyusu. Begitu anak-anak babi tersebut cukup besar untuk dapat mengkonsumsi makanan yang diberikan oleh para petani, mereka dipisahkan dari ibu mereka. Kemudian ibu tersebut dibuat hamil lagi…

 

 

TELUR

Sebagian besar orang akan berkata: ” Tidak ada salahnya menggunakan telur – toh ayam-ayamnya tidak dibunuh dan mereka menghasilkan terlalu banyak telur.”

* Ketika ayam-ayam dilahirkan, kira-kira separuh adalah ayam betina dan separuhnya lagi jantan. Sebagian besar dari anak ayam yang jantan tidak diinginkan dan segera dibunuh. Sisanya menjalani suatu kehidupan yang singkat dan dipotong segera setelah mereka mencapai berat yang bernilai ekonomi.

# Ayam-ayam betina penghasil telur dipotong segera setelah mereka ‘tidak berguna’.

# Hampir semua telur berasal dari ayam-ayam betina yang tersiksa di dalam kandang-kandang sempit – unggas-unggas yang ketakutan ini dipaksa menghabiskan 10 sampai 12 bulan berjejal-jejal di dalam sebuah kandang yang sempit.

# Paruh ayam-ayam betina ini dipotong menggunakan alat pemotong yang telah dipanaskan, akibatnya adalah rasa sakit yang teramat sangat dan terus-menerus karena terdapatnya jaringan-jaringan yang sensitif pada paruh. Hal ini dilakukan untuk menghemat biaya pemberian makan, namun karenanya ayam-ayam ini mengalami kesulitan pada saat makan, minum, dan dalam melakukan fungsi-fungsi alami seperti membersihkan tubuh mereka dengan menggunakan paruh.

 

SUSU, PRODUK SUSU

Sapi perah dijagal untuk dagingnya ketika mereka berusia 5 sampai 6 tahun. Di alam bebas mereka hidup selama 25-30 tahun…

* Sapi-sapi betina dibuat hamil setiap tahun agar mereka selalu memproduksi susu.

# Di alam bebas seekor anak sapi akan menyusu selama hampir satu tahun, tetapi industri susu akan memindahkan anak sapi segera setelah kelahirannya. Para ibu, yang penuh dengan instink keibuan, merasakan kehilangan anak-anak mereka dari tahun ke tahun.

# Sebagian anak sapi segera dijagal untuk makanan binatang peliharaan, dan rennet dari lambung mereka digunakan dalam pembuatan keju. Sebagian dibesarkan untuk dijadikan mesin penghasil susu, persis seperti ibu-ibu mereka. Sebagian lagi, digemukkan sebagai penghasil daging sapi, dijagal pada usia 11 bulan – sering tanpa pernah melihat rumput. Yang paling tidak beruntung diantara yang tidak beruntung dijadwalkan untuk menghasilkan ‘veal’ dan menghabiskan hidup yang singkat dan tidak alami di kandang-kandang kecil dengan susu tanpa zat besi sebagai makanannya agar mereka menghasilkan daging putih.

# Sapi-sapi perah diberi hormon dan antibiotik dalam dosis besar untuk meningkatkan pertumbuhan dan produksi susu, dan mencegah infeksi. Banyak dari obat-obatan ini menambah kecemaran produk-produk susu.

 

# Karena pemberian obat-obatan, sapi-sapi memproduksi susu 10 hingga 20 kali produksi susu normal mereka. Hal ini mengakibatkan ketidaknyamanan yang luarbiasa bagi sapi-sapi betina ini: ambing mereka menjadi sangat besar, sering terinfeksi, dan mereka menjadi tidak stabil karena berat tambahan pada kaki-kaki belakang mereka. Banyak darah dan nanah dari ambing yang terinfeksi masuk ke dalam susu.

 

# Produk-produk susu mengandung banyak kolesterol dan lemak jenuh, yang dianggap sebagai penyebab utama penyakit jantung. 50% dari orang yang mengkonsumsi produk-produk hewani meninggal karena penyakit jantung, dibandingkan dengan hanya 4% dari orang yang tidak mengkonsumsi.

 

# Susu telah terlihat bertanggungjawab atas banyaknya gangguan pencernaan, kulit dan masalah-masalah lainnya.

 

 

MADU, BEESWAX, PROPOLIS

Semua vegan society utama, termasuk MVI, sependapat bahwa hasil-hasil dari lebah tidak vegan. Namun, masih banyak individu, yang menganggap diri mereka vegan, yang berpendapat bahwa produk-produk lebah adalah vegan.

 

* Lebah-lebah biasanya terbunuh pada saat pemanenan produk mereka, kadang-kadang disengaja ketika petani lebah tidak mau / ingin mengeluarkan uang untuk melindungi lebah-lebah tersebut ketika musim dingin tiba.

 

# Perkawinan buatan yang mengakibatkan kematian lebah jantan sekarang adalah cara yang umum dipakai untuk menghasilkan ratu-ratu lebah baru. Cara yang dipilih untuk mendapatkan sperma lebah adalah dengan menarik kepala serangga tersebut. Pemisahan kepala mengirim impuls elektris kepada sistem syaraf yang menyebabkan timbulnya rangsangan seksual. Separuh badan yang tertinggal dari lebah yang sudah tidak berkepala lagi tersebut kemudian diremas untuk memaksanya ejakulasi.

 

# Madu dapat menyebabkan botulism (penyakit akut yang melumpuhkan yang disebabkan oleh botulin, terutama yang terdapat pada makanan), lihat Vegan Nutrition: Pure and Simple,oleh Dr. Michael Klaper, M.D. Madu sesungguhnya adalah makanan ‘muntahan’, madu memang adalah makanan serangga, bukan makanan manusia.

 

# 98% bagian dari madu adalah gula, mudah mencari penggantinya. Pemanis seperti sirup maple, barley malt, gula kelapa, atau sorghum lebih baik daripada madu.

 

 

GELATIN

Digunakan pada film (foto), film fotografis, kebanyakan permen, makanan pencuci mulut, obat-obatan, dan produk-produk lain. Gelatin; terbuat dari tulang-tulang, kulit, dan otot binatang rebus, sering sulit untuk dideteksi atau dihindari — tetapi dapat dengan mudah digantikan dengan agar-agar, guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) gum and carrageenan (karagen) yang berasal dari rumput laut. Sesungguhnya, ada alternatif-alternatif lain untuk film fotografis, namun tidak/belum digunakan karena gelatin lebih murah. Untunglah, kamera-kamera dengan hasil terbaik akan segera bersifat elektronis.

 

 

KULIT, BULU

Jarang di ketahui bahwa kulit sering merupakan bagian yang paling berharga dari seekor binatang: jika petani/ peternak tidak dapat menjual kulit-kulit maka daging dan produk hewani lainnya akan segera menjadi ‘begitu mahal’ sehingga hanya sedikit orang yang mau membeli.

 

* Proses produksi kulit (perendaman, pemberian warna, pengeringan, sentuhan akhir) menghabiskan banyak energi dan menggunakan bahan-bahan kimia yang menyebabkan polusi dan beracun (PCBs, senyawa-senyawa chromium).

 

* Penangkapan dan pemeliharan binatang- binatang untuk mengambil bulu mereka adalah proses yang sangatlah mengerikan dan menjijikkan. Binatang-binatang di pertanian bulu hidup di kandang-kandang kecil dan biasanya menderita kekurangan gizi. Mereka dijauhkan dari segala yang mungkin mereka dapatkan di alam bebas, dan tidak dapat mengikuti instink alami mereka. Proses kematian mereka biasanya sangatlah menyakitkan – pemberian aliran listrik pada anus adalah metode yang yang paling umum digunakan. Di beberapa negara, China, sebagai contoh, binatang-binatang (termasuk kucing dan anjing) dikuliti hidup-hidup. Suatu hal yang terlalu mengerikan untuk dibayangkan.

 

Binatang-binatang yang masuk ke dalam perangkap seringnya akan mencoba untuk membebaskan diri dengan cara mengunyah kaki/lengan/sayap mereka. Terlepas dari berhasil atau tidaknya mereka, mereka biasanya mati kehabisan darah.

 

* Alternatif-alternatif untuk kulit dan bulu – lebih murah dan lebih bagus/ awet. Salah satunya, “Lorica”, ‘berpori’ (untuk aliran udara), lebih kuat, tahan air, garam, dan kebanyakan bahan kimia lainnya. Jauh lebih awet daripada kulit – tidak ada lagi alasan untuk menggunakan kulit binatang sekarang ini, kecuali bila di tempat/ sekitar kita tinggal tidak tersedia bahan lainnya. Situasi-situasi seperti inilah yang akan sama-sama kita ubah.

 

 

WOL

Bahkan orang-orang tertentu yang mengaku sebagai vegan gagal menyadari kekejaman yang digunakan pada saat pengadaan wol…

 

* Di alam bebas, domba menghasilkan wol untuk menjaga suhu tubuh mereka, tetapi pengembangbiakan secara ilmiah telah mengubah mereka menjadi mesin-mesin penghasil wol, sering berat wol menjadi separuh dari keseluruhan berat tubuh mereka. Pada saat cuaca panas, domba-domba sering mati kepanasan, dan di Australia saja satu juta domba mati setiap tahunnya, akibat kedinginan setelah pemotongan wool mereka.

 

# Untuk mencegah adanya serangga-serangga kecil pada lipatan-lipatan kulit disekitar ekor domba, para petani sekarang megadakan operasi tanpa obat anti rasa sakit, disebut “mulesing”, di mana bagian-bagian dari daging dibuang, meninggalkan luka yang menyakitkan.

 

# Domba diperlakukan dengan kasar pada waktu pemotongan bulu, sebagai akibatnya goresan-goresan dalam yang serius dan posisi (tulang) paha yang bergeser sering terjadi.

 

# Hanya di Australia saja, sekitar 10 juta domba mati setiap tahunnya ketika mereka baru berumur beberapa hari. Penyebab utamanya adalah jumlah domba jauh melebihi kemampuan pekerja peternakan yang ada.

 

 

SUTERA

Sepotong kain sutera, meskipun merupakan bahan yang cantik, ratusan atau ribuan ulat sutera direbus hidup-hidup untuk menghasilkannya.

 

 

GULA

‘Pemutihan’ gula sering berarti penggunaan arang tulang binatang sebagai penghilang warna. Cara yang digunakan berbeda antara satu negara dengan negara lainnya, antara gula tebu dan gula beet, antara gula putih dan gula merah/coklat sehingga sangatlah sulit untuk mengetahui kebenarannya. Jalan keluar terbaik adalah salah satu dari ini : menghindari gula atau menggunakan gula yang tidak melalui proses ‘pemutihan’.

 

 

DOWN (Bulu-bulu)

Biasa ditemukan pada bantal, kasur lipat, dan pakaian tebal (untuk cuaca dingin). Masih sedikit sekali yang menyadari bagaimana cara bulu-bulu ini diambil dari unggas.

 

* Cara yang umum digunakan sekarang ini adalah dengan mengikat unggas-unggas yang ketakutan tersebut pada kaki mereka diikuti dengan mendongakkan leher mereka dan dimulailah pencabutan seluruh bulu badan mereka. Para dokter hewan telah menggambarkan proses ini sebagai “teramat kejam sekali”.

 

# Bagi angsa, siksaan ini dimulai ketika mereka berumur 8 minggu dan diulangi setiap 8 minggu dua atau tiga kali lagi. Burung-burung ini kemudian dipotong.

 

# Bagi ‘yang beruntung’ proses pencabutan dimulai setelah mereka mati.

 

# Pengganti bulu tidak hanya lebih murah, namun juga lebih tahan panas dan awet. Ekspedisi-ekspedisi ke Artik dan antartika biasanya memakai serat-serat buatan manusia.

 

 

PERLENGKAPAN RUMAH TANGGA (SELAIN MAKANAN)

Kosmetik, bahan-bahan pembersih dan produk- produk kebersihan untuk manusia biasanya memiliki kandungan hewani, dan hampir semuanya pernah diujikan pada binatang dengan cara memaksa mereka menelannya atau meneteskannya ke mata mereka. Jika Anda tidak dapat menemukan produk yang berlabel “Bebas Kekejaman”, “Tidak diujikan pada Binatang” atau “Tidak Mengandung Unsur Hewani”, biasanya ada penggantinya yang tersedia di alam.

 

 

PEMBEDAHAN, UJI COBA PADA BINATANG

Atas nama penelitian ilmiah berjuta-juta binatang melewati saat-saat mengerikan yang tidak terbayangkan. Yang beruntung segera mati.

 

* Kebanyakan produk yang bertanda ‘Baru!’ telah diujicobakan pada binatang. Karena sebagian besar produk yang bukan makanan tidak secara lengkap menuliskan daftar bahan mereka para vegan harus bertanya pada produsen. Gunakanlah produk-produk “Bebas Kekejaman” atau pengganti-pengganti alaminya.

 

# Untungnya kini para murid yang menolak untuk berpartisipasi dalam pembedahan binatang, yang biasanya terdapat dalam kurikulum sekolah, mempunyai kemungkinan ‘didengar’ yang lebih besar.

 

 

VAKSIN, OBAT-OBATAN

Industri obat-obatan kelihatannya semakin giat dalam menggunakan dokter sebagai boneka mereka. Industri ini sebagian besar ada untuk mengeruk keuntungan yang sebesar-besarnya – sering dengan mengorbankan binatang. Untuk masa sekarang ini benar-benar sulit untuk menemukan obat-obatan yang bersifat vegan, meskipun bahan-bahannya vegan ada saja kemungkinan obat-obatan tersebut telah diujikan pada binatang dengan alasan keselamatan manusia.

 

* Pembuatan vaksin menggunakan banyak bahan hewani: gelatin (lihat diatas), embrio ayam, ginjal monyet, sel manusia, sel guinea pig (marmut), dan seterusnya. Kultur-kultur sel dipelihara / dirawat dengan serum darah dari anak-anak sapi. Sangatlah mungkin penyakit-penyakit dan DNA dari binatang ikut tersuntikkan langsung ke dalam tubuh manusia. Terlepas dari digunakannya produk hewani, vaksin diproses menngunakan aluminium dan formaldehyde (karsinogen manusia), dan diawetkan dengan thiomerosal (turunan air raksa yang merupakan racun yang mematikan).

 

# Ada banyak problem kesehatan yang mungkin bermula dari penggunaan vaksin. Yang teringan adalah demam, kemudian kerusakan otak, sampai pada kematian. Ada banyak bahan penelitian yang mengungkapkan bahaya-bahaya yang mungkin dari vaksin.

 

# Cara terbaik untuk mendapatkan kekebalan alami adalah melalui pembangunan sistem kekebalan yang sehat dengan cara menyeleksi makanan yang kita makan dan gaya hidup yang baik. Konsumsilah buah-buahan, sayur-sayuran, biji-bijian, dan kacang-kacangan; lebih baik lagi jika mereka ditanam secara organis, bebas dari pengawet dan melalui pemrosesan yang sesedikit mungkin. Berolahraga dan hindarilah obat-obatan dan perangsang buatan. Jalan yang harus ditempuh para ilmuan masih sangatlah panjang sebelum mereka berhasil memperbaiki kondisi alam!

 

 

SIRKUS-SIRKUS

Tempat-tempat yang ceria, riuh-rendah dengan badut-badutnya tersenyum dari waktu ke waktu! Kelihatannya semua yang hadir di sana sedang bergembira… kecuali para binatangnya. Melakukan perjalanan jauh setiap harinya diantara pertunjukkan yang satu dengan pertunjukkan yang lainnya, dipaksa melakukan trik yang berbahaya dan memalukan setiap harinya, dan menghabiskan hidup mereka di lingkungan yang tidak alami: itulah kenyataan bagi para binatang di sirkus.

 

* Gajah-gajah dipaksa berdiri diatas kotoran mereka, dirantai pada satu tempat, yang dapat berlangsung selama 100 jam, ketika sedang dipindahkan dengan kendaraan-kendaraan yang tidak nyaman yang terlalu dingin atau terlalu panas. Gajah-gajah memiliki tiga kebutuhan dasar: Sayur-sayuran/ tumbuh-tumbuhan segar sebagai makanannya, hubungan keluarga, dan kebebasan bergerak. Tidak satupun terpenuhi di lingkungan sirkus. Di dalam kerangkeng, bayi-bayi gajah diambil dari ibunya pada umur satu tahun dan dilatih dengan cara-cara yang memaksakan kehendak dan menyiksa. Banyak gajah mati sebelum saatnya karena kondisi hidup mereka yang tidak sehat dan penuh dengan tekanan-tekanan.

 

Gajah-gajah liar hidup dalam kawanan-kawanan/ kelompok-kelompok dan memiliki keluarga besar dengan ikatan sosial yang kuat. Bayi-bayi gajah hidup sangat dekat dengan ibunya sampai 3 tahun pertama hidup mereka, dan gajah-gajah betina menetap dalam keluarga besar sepanjang hidup mereka. Mereka menjelajah sampai sejauh 25 mil (40 km) setiap hari untuk mencari makanan dan air. Mereka mandi debu dan menemukan kenyamanan di musim panas dengan cara berendam di air atau berdiri di keteduhan…

 

# Beruang-beruang, kucing-kucing eksotis dan binatang-binatang lainnya juga menderita, tidak ada tempat untuk bergerak/berpindah, kehidupan keluarga, atau makanan alami mereka.

 

# Binatang-binatang besar dan berbahaya dilatih dengan cara menakut-nakuti mereka dan intimidasi. Bukanlah merupakan suatu hal yang baru bagi para gajah jika mereka diikat dan dipukuli selama berhari-hari pada waktu-waktu tertentu pada saat mereka dilatih untuk ‘patuh dan tampil’. Selama masa latihan mereka dan selama hidup dalam kerangkeng mereka gajah-gajah dipukuli dengan tongkat-tongkat berat, dikejutkan dengan listrik, ditusuk dengan kait tajam dan dicambuk.

 

 

KEBUN BINATANG, AKUARIUM

Sebagian besar dari kita pernah mengunjungi kebun binatang dan telah melihat binatang-binatang tersebut dalam keadaan yang menyedihkan dan tertekan. Beberapa orang berpendapat bahwa kebun-kebun binatang diperlukan untuk menyelamatkan beberapa jenis/ species tertentu yang jika tidak dikurung di dalam kebun binatang akan menjadi punah. Kenyataan yang menyedihkannya adalah, kebanyakan kebun binatang didirikan semata-mata untuk keuntungan dan kesejahteraan binatang-binatangnya dinomorduakan. MVMI menyarankan Anda untuk menemukan bentuk-bentuk hiburan lain bagi teman-teman dan keluarga Anda …

 

* Kebun-kebun binatang adalah penjara-penjara bagi binatang, sangat sedikit usaha yang dilakukan untuk menciptakan lingkungan-lingkungan yang lebih alami. Satu-satunya perbedaan dengan penjara untuk manusia adalah setiap orang dapat melihat kesedihan dari para binatang di dalam kurungan-kurungan dan aquarium-aquarium mereka.

 

* Akibat dari pemenjaraan ini termasuk kebosanan, tingkah-laku neurotis (gangguan syaraf) dan menjadi jauh, sedemikian jauh, dari habitat asli mereka.

 

* Kebun-kebun binatang adalah bisnis (usaha dengan tujuan mencari keuntungan)dan biasanya harus menghasilkan keuntungan agar tetap buka/ berjalan. Hal ini sering berarti menjual, menukar atau membuang kelebihan binatang.

 

* Pada kebun-kebun binatang dimana kita boleh menyentuh, binatang-binatang kecil kadang-kadang mengalami ketidaknyamanan karena diperlakukan secara kasar oleh anak-anak yang terlalu bersemangat dan yang tidak tahu bagaimana cara berhadapan dengan binatang secara benar.

 

* Taman-taman laut buatan adalah salah satu contoh paling buruk dari kehidupan binatang-binatang yang dipenjara demi keuntungan dan sarana hiburan manusia. Mereka tidak dapat memperlihatkan keanggunan dan tingkah-laku alami dari lumba-lumba, paus, putri duyung (manatee) atau binatang- binatang penghuni laut lainnya-yang seharusnya hidup di samudera-samudera yang ribuan kilometer luasnya bersama keluarga mereka masing-masing namun berakhir di kolam-kolam dan tanki-tanki dengan obat pembersih.

 

 

TOKO BINATANG PELIHARAAN

Vegan memiliki pendapat yang berbeda-beda tentang memiliki binatang piaraan: beberapa percaya bahwa hal ini adalah pemenjaraan sedangkan yang lain berpendapat bahwa binatang-binatang tersebut gembira bersama teman-teman manusia mereka. Bagaimanapun, kebanyakan vegan setuju bahwa ‘industri binatang piaraan’ adalah industri yang menyedihkan yang bertujuan menangguk keuntungan yang sebanyak-banyaknya.

 

* Begitu banyaknya binatang yang berakhir di tempat-tempat penampungan sehingga 7 juta binatang dibunuh setiap tahunnya, karena tidak menemukan orang yang mau mengadopsi.

 

# Setiap kali seseorang membeli seekor anak anjing dari toko, anak anjing yang lain yang berada di penampungan dibunuh.

 

# Sebagian besar anjing-anjing kecil di toko binatang piaraan berasal dari tempat-tempat pembiakkan yang disebut “puppy mills”, tempat ibu-ibu anjing menghabiskan hidup mereka dalam kandang-kandang yang sempit, kotor, melahirkan anjing demi anjing. Para ibu dibunuh setelah tubuh mereka kelelahan dan tidak mampu memproduksi cukup anak anjing.

 

# Beberapa anjing berkaki cukup kecil untuk jatuh ke celah-celah di kandang mereka, sehingga mereka menghabiskan hidup mereka berusaha menjaga keseimbangan di atas kawat.

 

# Anjing-anjing akan terus dibunuh di tempat-tempat penampungan, kecuali perdagangan anak anjing dihentikan… jika Anda benar-benar menginginkan seekor binatang piaraan/teman, ingatlah untuk selalu terlebih dahulu mengunjungi tempat-tempat penampungan. Juga, ingatlah untuk memandulkan (dengan operasi kecil) anjing atau kucing Anda untuk mengurangi jumlah binatang yang tidak diinginkan.

 

 

MUTIARA, GADING…

Banyak binatang menghasilkan bahan-bahan yang dapat digunakan sebagai hiasan yang hanya akan kita dapatkan melalui penderitaan dan kematian mereka. Seperti biasa, kesejahteraan binatang jarang dipikirkan oleh mereka yang semata-mata berusaha memupuk keuntungan.

Ketika cangkang dari kerang dirusak atau menjadi sedikit terbuka oleh cacing atau parasit yang bosan, suatu materi dari luar, biasanya bijih kecil atau pasir, masuk. Bagian dalam cangkang kerang yang lunak dinamakan “nacre”. Ketika sebuah bijih masuk kedalam suaru cangkang, sel-sel nacre menjadi sibuk. Mereka menutupi bijih pasir tersebut dengan lapisan demi lapisan nacre dalam usaha untuk melindungi tubuh lunak dari kerang. Hasilnya, sebuah mutiara yang cantik terbentuk.
